In addition to raising money,
Mighty Moraine Man, has helped to increase interest in triathlon and multi-sport in both youth and adults by 31% from its initial year in 2013.
"This year's event should bring in even more money to the area, with this particular event being a state championship and a qualifier for next year's National Senior Games in Pittsburgh -- this region is becoming known as a great place for triathlon. It makes perfect sense too, we have fantastic opportunities for open water swimming, rolling hills for cycling, and wonderful scenery making running more enjoyable, all of which leads to an ideal place for triathlon and multi-sport, said Joella Baker, founder of Get Fit Families, LLC and race director of the Mighty Moraine Man race series.
“Local races in our communities exemplify the spirit and fun of our sport and I encourage all triathletes, from the experienced to the newbie, to race in your State Championship, said Rocky Harris, USA Triathlon CEO. Let’s celebrate another year with races coming back and let’s support our dedicated, local race directors who produce first-class events.”
Pittsburgh previously hosted the National Senior Games in 2005, but expects a much larger turnout next year with an estimated 30,000 visitors and could generate upwards of $35 million in economic impact.
For seniors to be eligible to compete in triathlon at the Games for 2023, an athlete completes a USA Triathlon Sanctioned event that is at least a 400 meter swim, 20k bike, and 5k run in that order, at one event. Then they must submit verification of that event, and their official results, to the
NSGA via their website.
"We are honored and excited to be a qualifying triathlon for next year's Senior National Games, especially since the Games are in Pittsburgh, said Baker. It is a true testament to the level of athleticism, determination, and grit of our local triathletes. Without them, volunteers, sponsors, and the commitment of the Park, we wouldn't be able to have such a successful event that has grown to what it is now."
